What is Chanel No 5?

Chanel No 5 contains Ylang ylang which is a small flower that is found on the cananga tree. The flowers are highly fragranced. Another ingredient is neroli oil. This is a plant oil. You can say that it is about the same smell as the flower found on an orange tree. Most likely it smells like an orange. Chanel No 5 is also made up of rose and jasmine. Jasmine is a small white flower (some are yellow). Then there is sandalwood that is included in the Chanel No 5 perfume.

Sandalwood is a fragrant tree oil. These trees can be found in Hawaii and India. Another addition from India is vetiver. This is a grass that can be related to lemon grass. Then there is a more common element that happens to be vanilla. It is a native from Mexico, found in orchids.

Also known to be found in the Chanel No 5 perfume is secretions from the perineal glands of the civet cat. These are a small Asia and African cat. This was used to make the fragrance last longer. Since the World Society for the Protection of Animals felt that harvesting such an scent to be cruelty to animals, they began using a synthetic scent instead, they began this in 1998.

In the 1950's, the perfume rapidly became popular in the United States. This was when Marilyn Monroe endorsed it. At one time, she was asked what she wore to bed and her reply was "Two drops of Chanel No. 5".

There were nine silk screens that were sealed with the Chanel No 5 perfume. Then in 1959 they made their way to the Museum of Modern Art. That museum can be found in New York. Did you know that the very first advertisement on British TV Channel Five was Chanel No 5 perfume.

There is a 2004 short film made in honor of the Chanel No 5 fragrance, called No 5 the film. It was about 180 seconds long. Chanel financed this short film at about $42 million. It starred Nicole Kidman and Rodrigo Santoro. They considered it to be an extended commercial. Infamous indeed, the Chanel No 5 fragrance paved the way for a more personal and not so pretty perfume. Chanel No 5 was worn by many then and is worn by many still.  Chanel products can be found online from websites such a FragranceX or Shopzilla for your personalized allure.

A Russian decent by the name of Ernest Beaux was hired by Coco Chanel to make 6 perfumes. His career began in 1898 at a company called A. Rallet and Company. He worked there as an assistant with creating soaps. When his military duty was finished he moved back to Moscow, Russia. He went back to work and this time he worked in the perfumery. In 1907, he became a member of the board of directors. Then he headed back into the military during World War One and actually became an officer for the White Russian Army.

When Beaux went back to France he began working with aldehyde. Aldehyde is an organic compound and also new organic compounds. The whole purpose was to be able to make a long lasting scent. All the while he was experimenting, between the years of 1919 and 1920, ultimately two of those formulas would become Chanel no. 5 and Chanel No. 22.

Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, A Russian imperial dynast, introduced Coco Chanel to Beaux in 1920. He also happened to be Chanel's lover. Soon after the formula's were shown to Chanel. He showed her all the numbers one through six and then twenty through twenty four. Of course her favorite was number five. Then in 1961, Beaux passed away. Jasmine was and still is to be considered the most expensive compound for perfumes.

Expensive Perfume Testers
The reason for this is because of the costly distilling process. Jasmine is definitely an element used in Chanel No 5. That is what Coco Chanel wanted. She wanted the most expensive perfume ever. Chanel fragranced her French boutique with the Chanel No 5 perfume in efforts to be different from all of her competition. Chanel No 5 was introduced to her friends on May 5, 1921. She even gave free samples to her best of friends.

The whole idea of her perfume was to make sure that it was created. She didn't want one of the norm as in a flower type. She wanted an experiment, something that was conjured of a lot of elements. Chanel No 5 was just that. Chanel's exact words were "Yes, I really do mean artificial, like a dress, something that has been made. I don't want any rose or lily of the valley, I want a perfume that is a composition."

She wanted something that was different; that went with her diverse tom-boy like personality. She didn't want pretty, like most floral scents. Chanel definitely not only revolutionized women's apparel, she also revolutionized women's perfume. She felt that an 'artificial' (meaning something created from different elements) would illuminate a woman's natural beauty even more.
